Catcher Post 3

Holden is guilty of sometimes being a phony. Give at lest 2 specific examples from the book.

  1. Well, he is all polite and tell's that woman on the train that he has a brain tumor, and pretends that he is still in school when in fact he has been expelled. And in the bar, he acts like he is old enough to drink and is sophisticated just to put up a front because he is insecure with who he really is.

  2. He is phony when he says he hates reading n isnt good at it and then throughout the book we hear about all of the books that he HAS read and has enjoyed. Then he is phony with Ackley because he talks crap about him and says how he gets on his nerves and yet he still tries to hang out with him.

  3. Holden is phony in several ways. For one he keeps talking about how he really cant stand ackley, but in the beginning of the book he continues to go and talk to him and put up with him, then he says he hates reading and isnt good at it, yet you hear him talk about books he likes and authors that he likes. Then with stradlater he is phony too and with the woman on the bus and the women in the bar, he is even phony with the professor at the beginning

  4. when he asked sally to runaway with him but she said no and he called her a pain. then he really started to hate her. and the second time was when he was talking to old luce and he became sorry about talking to him about his sex life.

  5. I think Holden is being phony when he really wants to talk to the girl that Stradlater is on a date with but he keeps telling himself that he is just not in the mood to do it when really he is just nervous or scared of her or what she might say, and another time is when he is on the train and tells that boy's mother that he is still in school but is leaving because he has a brain tumor when really he is fine and just flunked out.

  6. The first example of Holden being a phony is Reading and movies. He says that he doesn't like to read and hates the movies and people that like to go there. Then he starts to tell us about the books he reads and how he would love to meet the Arthur. He also goes to the play towards the end of the novel and tells us about the time he went to the movies with his little sister. Another example is when he goes to the bar. He tries to show everyone that he is old enough to drink and that he is older than he really is. He is a phony in many ways.
