An example of this is his red hunting hat. He says he bought the hat because it was so brightly colored and it would stand out. However, he always makes a point of taking it off when he goes outside. He tries to present an image of self-confidence and indifference to the opinions of others, but his actions show that he is self-conscious. His attitude toward sex can also be seen as hypocritical. He criticizes people who are clearly sexual, and he deeply fears that exposure to sex is extremely dangerous to innocence. A prime example is when he was going to have sex with the prostitute, Sunny, but ends up not doing it. At first he thought he did, but when the moment came he couldn't do it.
one example of him being a hypocrite is with ackley and stradlater. He says he cant stand ackley, but he allows the kid to just do whatever in their room and he goes over to him and talks to him and invites him to go out. Then with stradlater he writes an english composition for him after he goes on and on about hating those kinds of people and not wanting to do things for them yet he does anyway. Then theres the phony thing again, he calls everyone else around him phony when he is really phony himself.
One example would be when he says he doesn't like his brother for being a prostitute. He talks bad about him going to Hollywood and all. Then later on in the novel Holden wants to pay a prostitute for her time and her attention. Another example is when he talks how bad ackley is and how he hates to talk to him. But when stradlater punches him in the face he goes to ackley's room. He does everything he can to strike up a conversation.
